Finding the Best Plastic Surgeons in Portland, Oregon: A Practical Guide to Board-Certified Expertise

February 9, 2026

Dr. John S. Lee with his staff at NW Plastic Surgery Center in Portland Oregon

Choosing a plastic surgeon in Portland involves more than comparing websites or advertisements. Patients benefit most from evaluating verified training, surgical experience, safety standards, and a surgeon’s ability to deliver balanced, natural-appearing results.

This guide explains what “best” means in modern plastic surgery — including American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) certification, consistent before-and-after outcomes, and a transparent, patient-centered process. It also outlines how to compare procedures, credentials, recovery expectations, and typical costs across the Portland metro area and nearby cities.

Throughout, the emphasis is on education and informed decision-making, helping patients identify surgeons who prioritize safety, proportion, and individualized care rather than trends or exaggerated results.

Who Is Dr. John S. Lee, MD?

John S. Lee, MD, is a board-certified plastic surgeon serving patients in Portland, Oregon, and the surrounding region, including Vancouver, Washington. Certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery reflects completion of accredited surgical training, rigorous examinations, and ongoing peer review — all of which support a high standard of patient safety and surgical competence.

Dr. Lee’s practice addresses a wide range of aesthetic concerns involving the breasts, body, and face, with a clinical philosophy centered on proportionate, natural-looking outcomes that respect each patient’s anatomy. When comparing plastic surgeons in Portland, these foundational elements — certification, documented outcomes, and a clearly defined surgical approach — provide meaningful benchmarks for evaluation.

What Credentials and Experience Does Dr. Lee Have?

Dr. Lee is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties for plastic surgery. This credential signifies completion of accredited residency training, comprehensive examinations, and ongoing maintenance of certification.

When researching plastic surgeons, patients are encouraged to:

  • Confirm board certification through official sources
  • Review a surgeon’s scope of procedures and case experience
  • Examine before-and-after galleries that reflect consistent technique and realistic outcomes

In Portland, surgeons with extensive aesthetic experience are better equipped to manage anatomical variation, revision cases, and individualized surgical planning — all of which influence safety and long-term satisfaction.

How Are Natural-Looking Results Achieved?

Natural-appearing outcomes are the result of careful preoperative planning, appropriate candidacy, and conservative surgical decision-making. In Dr. Lee’s practice, this process typically includes:

  • Detailed consultations focused on goals, anatomy, and limitations
  • Use of imaging or measurements to establish realistic expectations
  • Selection of techniques that prioritize balance, symmetry, and scar placement

Rather than pursuing dramatic change, the emphasis is on refinement and proportion, with close postoperative follow-up to support healing and long-term results. Patients seeking subtle, enduring improvement benefit from surgeons who can clearly explain both the plan and its limitations.

Plastic Surgery Procedures Commonly Offered in Portland

Most experienced Portland plastic surgeons provide surgical options across three primary categories — breast, body, and facial procedures — as well as select non-surgical treatments that support overall aesthetic goals.

Understanding indications, limitations, and expected outcomes helps patients narrow options before consultation.

Common Procedures and Typical Indications

Breast AugmentationDesire for increased or restored volumeImproved fullness and proportion using implants or fat transfer
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)Excess abdominal skin or muscle laxityFlatter abdomen and improved waist contour
FaceliftFacial laxity and jowlingSmoother contours and longer-lasting facial rejuvenation

These summaries are educational and not prescriptive; candidacy and outcomes depend on individual anatomy and health factors.

Facial Plastic Surgery Procedures Offered in Portland

Facial plastic surgery focuses on restoring balance, definition, and harmony to the face while preserving natural expression. In Portland, board-certified plastic surgeons commonly offer a range of facial procedures designed to address visible signs of aging, volume loss, and skin laxity in a measured, proportionate way.

Rather than treating the face as isolated features, experienced surgeons evaluate facial anatomy as a whole, including skin quality, underlying structure, and how different areas age together. This comprehensive approach supports results that look refreshed rather than overcorrected.

Common Facial Procedures and What They Address

FaceliftSagging in the midface and lower faceSmoother contours and improved jawline definition
Neck LiftLoose skin or banding in the neckMore defined neck and jaw transition
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)Heavy or tired-looking upper or lower eyelidsBrighter, more rested eye appearance
Brow LiftLow or heavy brow positionImproved brow balance and upper-face openness

These procedures may be performed individually or in carefully selected combinations, depending on anatomy, aging patterns, and patient goals.

Popular Breast Procedures in Portland

Frequently performed breast procedures include:

  • Breast augmentation
  • Breast lift (mastopexy)
  • Breast reduction
  • Breast implant exchange
  • Breast implant removal

Each procedure addresses distinct concerns such as volume, position, or implant-related issues. Surgical planning considers breast shape, tissue quality, chest anatomy, and lifestyle factors.

Recovery timelines vary:

  • Augmentation alone may allow light activity within 1–2 weeks
  • Combined or revision procedures often require longer recovery

In some cases, staged procedures improve safety and aesthetic outcomes. Reviewing real case examples and discussing recovery expectations during consultation is essential.

Body Contouring Procedures Available Locally

Body contouring options in Portland commonly include:

  • Liposuction
  • Abdominoplasty
  • Arm or thigh lifts
  • Combined procedures such as “mommy makeovers.”

Procedure selection depends on skin elasticity, fat distribution, and patient goals. Liposuction alone reshapes localized fat but does not address loose skin; excisional procedures may be recommended when skin laxity is present.

Patients should expect discussions about scarring, contour limitations, and a phased recovery, with a gradual return to activity over weeks to months.

How to Choose the Best Plastic Surgeon in Portland

Choosing a surgeon should be based on safety-focused criteria, not marketing claims. Key factors include:

  • Board Certification: Confirm ABPS certification
  • Documented Results: Review consistent before-and-after galleries
  • Communication Style: Clear explanations of risks, recovery, and expectations

Scheduling consultations with shortlisted surgeons allows patients to evaluate surgical philosophy, revision policies, and postoperative care.

Why Board Certification Matters

ABPS certification confirms that a surgeon has completed formal plastic surgery training, passed comprehensive examinations, and participates in ongoing peer review. This distinction helps separate fully trained plastic surgeons from other providers offering cosmetic procedures.

During consultation, patients should feel comfortable asking about:

  • Training background
  • Case volume for specific procedures
  • How complications or revisions are handled

These discussions support informed, safety-focused decision-making.

Understanding Surgeon Reviews and Testimonials

Patient reviews are most useful when evaluated for patterns rather than isolated opinions. Helpful indicators include:

  • Consistent feedback about communication and follow-up
  • Realistic descriptions of recovery
  • Transparency around outcomes and revisions

Testimonials should be considered alongside verified before-and-after galleries to ensure alignment between reported experiences and documented results.

The Typical Patient Journey for Plastic Surgery in Portland

Most patients move through four stages:

ConsultationEvaluation, goal setting, planningSingle visit; planning may take weeks
Pre-operativeMedical clearance and instructions1–2 weeks before surgery
SurgeryProcedure in accredited facilityDay of surgery
RecoveryFollow-up, healing, activity progressionWeeks to months

Clear communication at each stage helps reduce uncertainty and supports safer outcomes.

What to Expect During Recovery

Recovery generally includes:

  • Temporary swelling and bruising
  • Gradual return to normal activities
  • Scheduled follow-up visits to monitor healing

Scar maturation and final results evolve over several months. Patients are advised to follow postoperative instructions closely and maintain communication with their surgical team.

Evaluating Before-and-After Photo Galleries

High-quality galleries demonstrate:

  • Consistent lighting and positioning
  • Clear postoperative timelines
  • Proportionate, balanced results

Natural outcomes are evident when improvements enhance appearance without overcorrection. Patients should ask how photos were taken and at what stage of recovery.

Costs and Financing for Plastic Surgery in Portland

Costs vary based on procedure complexity, anesthesia, facility fees, and individualized planning.

Estimates should be itemized, including surgeon, anesthesia, facility, and postoperative care fees. Results and costs vary, and consultation is necessary for personalized estimates.

Financing Options

Patients commonly use:

  • Credit cards
  • Third-party medical financing
  • Structured in-office payment plans

Many practices, including NW Plastic Surgery Portland, offer financing consultations to help patients plan responsibly and align treatment with budgeting needs.

Final Thought

Selecting a plastic surgeon in Portland is a personal decision that should balance credentials, experience, communication, and documented results. Thoughtful research and consultation support safer care and outcomes that feel natural, proportionate, and appropriate for each individual patient.

Male Aesthetics: The Growing Interest in Subtle Enhancements for Men

Male Aesthetics: The Growing Interest in Subtle Enhancements for Men

John S. Lee MD male aesthetics

Men in Portland and across Oregon are increasingly seeking subtle enhancements that help them look refreshed without appearing dramatically different. As conversations around self-care, aging, and confidence evolve, male aesthetics has become one of the fastest-growing areas in plastic surgery.

Today, the goal is not transformation but refinement. This shift has led many men to choose board-certified specialists who understand male facial anatomy and who can deliver natural results with precision. Skilled surgeons who prioritize subtle, harmonizing improvements can achieve outcomes that appear authentic and true to each individual’s features.

Why Male Aesthetics Are Growing in Popularity

More men are prioritizing their appearance as part of their overall well-being. Careers, social relationships, and personal confidence can all be influenced by how someone looks and feels. Portland’s active lifestyle and professional diversity have contributed to a broader comfort with seeking expert aesthetic care.

For many men, the goal is simple. They want to look like the best version of themselves. They want results that are natural, balanced, and appropriate for their age and features.

The Shift Toward Subtle Enhancements

Men are opting for treatments that help them look rested, sharper, and more youthful without revealing that they’ve had something done. Subtle enhancements refresh the face while preserving natural character and individuality.

Rather than dramatic changes, men are seeking improvements that blend seamlessly with their existing features. These refined results require a surgeon with a deep understanding of facial proportions and male aesthetic ideals.

Most Requested Procedures for Men

Eyelid Surgery (Upper & Lower)

Upper and lower eyelid surgery can address puffiness, sagging skin, and tired-looking eyes. This is one of the most common procedures for men because it restores a more rested, alert appearance without altering facial character. Results are natural and understated, making it a favored option for men seeking subtle rejuvenation.

Gynecomastia Surgery (Male Chest Contouring)

Gynecomastia surgery reduces excess glandular tissue or fat in the chest, helping men achieve a flatter, more contoured appearance. This procedure is highly effective for restoring confidence, especially for men who feel self-conscious in fitted clothing or during physical activities.

Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)

Otoplasty reshapes or repositions the ears to create a more balanced appearance. Many men choose this procedure to correct prominent ears or improve symmetry. The results are long-lasting and look completely natural.

Understanding Male Facial and Structural Aesthetic Goals

Male aesthetic goals differ from female goals in several ways. Men typically want sharper contours, minimal added volume, and a natural firmness in the face or torso. Achieving these goals requires a surgeon who understands how to preserve masculine features while improving overall harmony.

The Importance of Choosing a Skilled Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon

Male aesthetic surgery requires precision and a deep understanding of anatomical differences. Working with a board-certified plastic surgeon ensures medical expertise, advanced training, and an approach rooted in natural-looking results.

The most successful outcomes are created by surgeons who listen closely, evaluate each patient’s goals, and prioritize subtle improvements that look authentic.

Dr. John S. Lee’s Approach to Natural and Refined Results

Dr. John S. Lee is known for his meticulous, thoughtful approach to male aesthetics. He focuses on subtle improvements that look authentic and respect each patient’s natural identity and proportions. With years of experience treating male patients in Portland, he combines technical precision with an artistic understanding of male features, including skin thickness, facial structure, and musculature.

His philosophy centers on creating refined enhancements rather than visible alterations. Each treatment plan is personalized—whether the goal is eyelid rejuvenation, ear reshaping, or gynecomastia surgery—to create balanced, natural outcomes.

What Men Can Expect During a Consultation

A consultation with Dr. Lee is private, informative, and centered on understanding each patient’s concerns. Men can expect:

  • A careful assessment of areas of concern
  • A review of facial or chest structure
  • Clear recommendations for appropriate surgical options
  • A focus on achieving natural, masculine-looking results

Patients are encouraged to ask questions and discuss their goals openly. The approach is collaborative and designed to help each person make confident, informed decisions.

Considering Subtle Enhancements

Subtle enhancements can make a meaningful difference in how a man looks and feels. Whether the goal is to appear more rested around the eyes, improve ear symmetry, or restore confidence in the chest, the right procedure can have a lasting impact.

Ruptured vs. Leaking Breast Implants: Symptoms, Causes, and What to Do Next

October 13, 2025

Ruptured breast implant and leaking breast implant

What You Need to Know About Implant Leaks and Ruptures

Ruptured breast implant and leaking breast implant

If you have breast implants, it’s natural to feel concerned when you hear terms like “leak” or “rupture.” Both may sound alarming, but they aren’t always the same thing. While both involve changes to the integrity of the implant shell, a rupture and a leak differ in how they happen, how they appear, and how they affect your body.

This guide explains those differences clearly — so you can recognize early signs, understand what’s happening, and know when to consult your doctor.

What Happens in a Breast Implant Rupture?

A rupture occurs when the outer shell of a breast implant develops a tear or break, allowing the internal filling (saline or silicone) to escape.

Causes of Implant Rupture:

  • Natural wear and aging of the implant over time
  • Injury or trauma to the chest area
  • Surgical damage during procedures or biopsies
  • Excessive pressure or capsular contracture (hardening of scar tissue around the implant)

Types of Ruptures

1. Saline Implant Rupture

When a saline implant ruptures, the sterile saltwater solution leaks out quickly and is safely absorbed by the body.

Common signs include:

  • Sudden decrease in breast size or volume
  • Noticeable asymmetry
  • Softer or wrinkled breast appearance

Since saline is harmlessly absorbed, this type of rupture is easier to detect visually and typically requires implant replacement for cosmetic balance.

2. Silicone Implant Rupture

Silicone implants are filled with a cohesive gel that holds its shape, even when the shell is compromised.

When these rupture, the gel usually stays inside the scar tissue (capsule) around the implant. This is known as a “silent rupture.”

Silent rupture symptoms can include:

  • Subtle breast firmness or shape changes
  • Mild discomfort or tenderness
  • Localized swelling or tingling
  • No visible change at all

Because silent ruptures often show no obvious signs, regular imaging (MRI or ultrasound) is recommended to monitor silicone implants.

What Is a Breast Implant Leak?

Key Points About Leaks:

  • Leaks can occur without a visible rupture.
  • They may release small amounts of silicone oil or compounds through the implant surface over time.
  • Leaks are generally not dangerous, but may contribute to inflammation or tissue irritation in sensitive individuals.

Some women report subtle systemic symptoms that they associate with leaks (such as fatigue or joint pain), though research continues to explore these connections.

How to Tell If Your Implant Is Leaking or Ruptured

You may not always notice a problem right away, especially with silicone implants.

If you experience any of the following changes, it’s best to schedule a medical evaluation:

Possible Signs:

  • Change in breast size, shape, or symmetry
  • Lumps, swelling, or firmness
  • Breast pain, burning, or sensitivity
  • Tingling or numbness around the chest
  • Hardening or tightness (capsular contracture)

Even without symptoms, regular imaging is essential for silicone implant safety.

The FDA breast implant guide recommends MRI screening 5–6 years after surgery, then every 2–3 years thereafter.

How Ruptures and Leaks Are Diagnosed

Your doctor or plastic surgeon may use the following tools to evaluate your implants:

• MRI:

The most accurate method for detecting silent silicone ruptures.

• Ultrasound:

A more accessible and affordable alternative, though less sensitive.

• Physical Exam:

For visible changes in shape, firmness, or size.

• Mammogram (with caution):

May provide clues, but is not always reliable for implant evaluation.

What Are the Treatment Options?

Treatment depends on your symptoms, the type of implant, and the extent of leakage or rupture.

For Saline Implants:

  • Usually replaced promptly after rupture.
  • Replacement can be performed during the same procedure as removal.

For Silicone Implants:

  • Surgeons typically recommend removal of the implant and surrounding capsule to prevent further migration of silicone.
  • Some patients choose to replace implants, while others opt not to.

Your surgeon will guide you through options based on your goals, anatomy, and health history.

Can Leaks or Ruptures Cause Health Problems?

According to the FDA and ASPS, there is no confirmed link between silicone leakage and systemic diseases such as autoimmune disorders.

However, localized reactions — such as inflammation, swelling, or silicone granulomas — can occur in some cases.

Because every patient’s body responds differently, individual evaluation is key.

Many women feel reassured after replacement or removal, especially when symptoms improve.

Prevention and Long-Term Care

You can’t completely prevent a rupture or leak, but you can reduce risks through proactive care.

Tips for Implant Health:

  • Keep regular check-ups with your plastic surgeon.
  • Schedule an MRI or ultrasound as recommended.
  • Avoid unnecessary trauma to the chest.
  • Notify your doctor about any sudden changes in breast appearance or feel.
  • Replace older implants when recommended (most last 10–15 years).

Modern “gummy bear” cohesive gel implants have improved durability and lower leakage risk — but no device lasts forever.

Conclusion

While the terms “rupture” and “leak” are often used interchangeably, they describe different processes with different levels of concern.

Understanding those differences helps you stay informed, proactive, and confident about your breast health.

If you notice any changes or simply want peace of mind, speak with a qualified healthcare provider.

Regular monitoring and open communication remain the best ways to ensure your implants, and your health, stay in good condition for years to come.

Facelift Surgery in Portland: What to Expect from Consultation to Recovery

Your Path to a Refreshed Look

If you’ve been noticing changes in your face like sagging skin, deep creases, or loss of definition along the jawline, you’re not alone. These are natural signs of aging, but they can sometimes make you feel older than you truly are. For many, facelift surgery offers a proven way to restore a refreshed, youthful appearance. When performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon with advanced techniques and extensive experience, the results can look natural, harmonious, and long-lasting.

This guide walks you through every step of the facelift journey, from your first consultation to recovery, so you’ll know exactly what to expect.

What Is a Facelift?

A facelift (rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure that lifts and tightens facial tissues to address visible signs of aging. It primarily targets:

  • Sagging skin in the midface, jawline, and neck
  • Deep creases between the nose and mouth
  • Jowls or loss of jawline definition
  • Loose skin and fat deposits under the chin

How It Works

A facelift is more than just tightening the skin. When only the surface is pulled, the results can look overly tight and often do not last long. By lifting the SMAS layer (the muscles and connective tissue beneath the skin), the face is supported at a deeper level. This approach delivers natural results by addressing deeper structures, rather than just the skin, resulting in a smoother, more balanced, and refreshed appearance.

Why Choose Facelift Surgery?

Benefits

  • Natural, lasting rejuvenation – Modern techniques can deliver results that look authentic and may last a decade or more.
  • Enhanced facial balance – Restores youthful contours and proportion while avoiding an artificial appearance.
  • Renewed self-confidence – Helps you feel comfortable, vibrant, and aligned with how you see yourself.

Risks to Consider

Like all surgeries, facelifts carry potential risks such as bruising, swelling, temporary numbness, and, rarely, infection or scarring. Choosing a Portland board-certified plastic surgeon who combines refined surgical techniques with years of hands-on experience can significantly reduce these risks.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate?

You may be well-suited for facelift surgery if you:

  • Are in good overall health and able to undergo surgery safely
  • Do not smoke, or are willing to quit before and during the recovery period
  • Have skin with adequate elasticity and a well-defined underlying bone structure
  • Wish to improve moderate to significant signs of facial aging, such as sagging skin or deep creases

Your Facelift Journey

1. Consultation

Your facelift journey begins with a one-on-one consultation designed to fully assess your needs and goals. During this visit, your surgeon will:

  • Review your medical history and carefully evaluate your facial anatomy
  • Discuss your concerns, priorities, and desired outcomes
  • Explain the surgical options, techniques, and recovery process in detail
  • Share before-and-after photos of previous patients to help you visualize potential results

A thorough consultation should offer a collaborative, comfortable setting where your surgeon addresses your questions, explains your options clearly, and provides expert guidance to help you make well-informed decisions.

2. Preparing for Surgery

Your surgeon will provide clear, detailed pre-operative instructions to help ensure the best possible outcome. These may include:

  • Avoiding certain medications, supplements, or foods that can increase bleeding or affect healing
  • Stopping smoking or vaping well in advance to support optimal recovery
  • Arranging for a trusted friend or family member to drive you home and assist you during the first 24–48 hours
  • Preparing your recovery space with essentials like extra pillows, easy-to-reach water, and any prescribed medications
  • Planning your schedule to allow for adequate rest and follow-up appointments

The Day of Surgery

Facelift surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. Depending on the extent of correction and whether additional treatments, such as eyelid surgery or browlift, are performed at the same time, surgery may take between 5 and 7 hours. Your surgeon will make discreet incisions, usually hidden along the hairline and around the ear, to help minimize visible scarring while allowing for precise tissue repositioning and skin refinement.

Recovery Timeline

Week 1

Swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are normal during the first week and can be managed with prescribed medication and cold compresses. Keep your head elevated, avoid strenuous activity, and follow all wound care instructions closely to support proper healing and minimize complications.

Weeks 2–3

Bruising continues to fade, and most patients can resume light activities. This stage is ideal for protecting your healing skin from sun exposure, as limiting UV rays can help preserve your results and support optimal recovery.

1–3 Months

Most swelling has resolved, and your facial contours become more refined and natural-looking. During this stage, you can typically return to your regular routines, including exercise, while continuing to follow your surgeon’s guidance for long-term scar care and skin protection.

Advanced Facelift Techniques

Board-certified plastic surgeons often rely on refined techniques to ensure results that look natural and last for years. Two key approaches include:

SMAS tightening: This method enhances facial definition by lifting and repositioning the underlying support layer rather than focusing only on the skin. By addressing these deeper structures, the outcome is smoother, more balanced, and longer lasting.

Meticulous incision placement: Incisions are carefully planned along natural contours, such as the hairline and around the ear, to minimize visible scarring and provide a discreet, refined result.

Cost Considerations

Facelift costs in Portland vary depending on the surgeon’s experience, technique, and whether additional procedures are performed. During your consultation, you’ll receive a detailed, personalized estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I look unnatural after a facelift?

No. When performed by a skilled, board-certified surgeon, a facelift is designed to create a refreshed, natural appearance rather than a “pulled” or overdone look.

How long will the results last?

Many patients enjoy their rejuvenated look for 10 years or longer, though the natural aging process will continue over time.

Is a facelift painful?

Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort, which is effectively managed with prescribed medication during recovery.

Can I combine a facelift with other procedures?

Yes. It’s common to combine a facelift with treatments such as eyelid surgery, a brow lift, or a neck lift for more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

Achieving Your Best Results

A facelift can be a transformative procedure, restoring a more youthful, refreshed appearance that reflects how you feel inside. With the right surgeon, modern techniques, and a treatment plan tailored to your needs, results can look natural and last for years. If you’re considering this procedure, schedule a private consultation with a Portland plastic surgery clinic to discuss your goals, explore your options, and understand what to expect at every stage of the process.

Out-of-Town Cosmetic Surgery Patients: How to Plan, Prepare, and Get the Best Results

July 24, 2025

Out-of-town cosmetic surgery patients guide

Top Travel Tips for Out-of-Town Cosmetic Surgery Patients

Out-of-town cosmetic surgery patients guide

More and more people are choosing to travel for cosmetic surgery, whether across state lines or internationally. Whether you’re seeking a top-rated specialist, better pricing, or more privacy during recovery, planning your trip carefully is essential to ensure a smooth and successful experience. This guide breaks down everything you need to know before, during, and after traveling for your procedure.

Why Patients Travel for Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery isn’t just about convenience—it’s about trust, results, and the overall experience. Many patients are willing to go the extra mile (literally) to find a board-certified surgeon with a strong reputation, modern facilities, or a style that matches their vision.

Medical Tourism vs. Domestic Travel

While international destinations like Mexico, Turkey, and South Korea have become popular for cosmetic procedures abroad, many patients prefer to travel within the U.S. to minimize risks and ensure better continuity of care.

Reasons Patients Travel

  • Access to highly rated or specialized surgeons
  • Increased privacy away from home
  • More recovery time built into a “surgical getaway”
  • Cost differences in other cities or states

Pre-Travel Planning: What to Do Before You Go

Preparation is key. The more you plan ahead, the smoother your surgical journey will be.

Do Your Research

Choose a board-certified surgeon with a proven track record, strong before-and-after portfolio, and positive reviews. Schedule a virtual consultation if you’re not local.

Book the Right Length of Stay

Ask your clinic how long you should stay nearby for post-operative checkups and potential complications. Most patients require a stay of at least 5–10 days, depending on the procedure.

Arrange Support

You’ll need someone to accompany you for the first 24–72 hours post-surgery. This could be a friend, family member, or professional recovery nurse.

Prep Your Home for Return

Before leaving for surgery, prep your bed, meals, and recovery space at home so returning is stress-free.

What to Pack for a Cosmetic Surgery Trip

Packing for surgery is different from packing for vacation. You’ll want to focus on comfort and practicality.

Essentials Include:

  • Loose, front-zip, or button-down clothing
  • Slip-on shoes
  • Any prescribed medications
  • Medical-grade compression garments (if required)
  • Scar cream or ointments
  • Neck pillow or wedge pillows for sleeping
  • Dry shampoo and facial wipes
  • Copies of your medical documents and itinerary

Pro tip: Bring extra layers and a water bottle. Clinics can feel chilly, and hydration is key for healing.

Booking Flights and Accommodations Wisely

Flights

  • Arrive 1–2 days before surgery to settle in
  • Avoid flying home too soon—allow for swelling to go down and incisions to stabilize
  • Choose nonstop flights if possible

Where to Stay

Look for lodging near your clinic, ideally with elevator access, quiet surroundings, and in-room kitchen amenities. Ask your surgeon’s office if they have hotel partnerships or recommended recovery centers.

Traveling After Surgery

Is It Safe to Travel?

Always follow your surgeon’s advice on when to fly or drive post-op. Long trips can increase the risk of blood clots or swelling if taken too soon after surgery.

In-Transit Tips

  • Wear compression garments as advised
  • Stand and walk every hour if flying
  • Stay hydrated and avoid salty snacks
  • Use extra pillows for support

If you’ve had a body procedure like a BBL, tummy tuck, or breast augmentation, arrange special cushions or avoid sitting directly on the operated areas.

Creating a Comfortable Recovery Environment

Whether you recover in a hotel or Airbnb, set yourself up for rest and healing:

  • Order groceries or pre-made meals in advance
  • Minimize noise and distractions
  • Pack entertainment like audiobooks, TV shows, or puzzles
  • Keep medications, water, and wound care supplies within reach

When to Follow Up and How

Make sure you know how to stay in touch with your surgeon post-op, especially after returning home.

  • Attend all in-person follow-up visits before traveling home
  • Ask if virtual check-ins via Zoom or photos are available
  • Know the red flags: extreme pain, fever, or abnormal swelling may require immediate medical attention

Bonus Tips for International Travelers

  • Bring printed copies of prescriptions, medical documents, and translations if needed
  • Secure travel insurance that covers elective surgery and unexpected complications
  • Understand local medical standards and licensing (not all countries offer the same safety and sterilization protocols)

Final Thoughts

Traveling for cosmetic surgery can be an empowering and rewarding experience when done right. By carefully planning your logistics, support, and post-op care, you’ll set yourself up for a smooth recovery and beautiful results.

Not ideal for: Patients with active acne, open wounds, or certain skin conditions like eczema or rosacea in the treatment area.

We conduct a personalized consultation to determine if Fraxel is suitable for your skin type and goals.

What Happens During Treatment?

A typical session includes:

  • Cleansing the skin and applying a topical numbing agent
  • Passing the Fraxel laser over the treatment area in multiple passes
  • Applying soothing products and post-care instructions

The treatment takes about 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the area treated.

How Many Sessions Will You Need?

Most patients benefit from a series of 3 to 5 treatments, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, depending on the severity of concerns and desired results.

Results are progressive—you’ll likely see improvement after one session, but optimal outcomes appear gradually over a few months.

What’s the Downtime Like?

Recovery is typically minimal but varies by skin sensitivity:

Day    What to Expect

1        Redness and swelling, like a sunburn

2–3    Tightness, dryness, or mild flaking

4–7    Peeling and gradual skin renewal

Avoid sun exposure, skip exfoliation, and use gentle skincare with SPF. You can typically resume makeup after 48–72 hours.

Is It Safe?

Fraxel has a strong safety profile when administered by trained professionals in a clinical setting. At our cosmetic clinic:

  • We treat all skin types with care
  • We adjust settings based on your skin tone and concerns
  • Our board-certified team monitors each treatment closely

Some mild side effects may include temporary redness, swelling, or a bronzed appearance, but serious complications are extremely rare.

Get the Most Out of Your Treatment

Before treatment:

  • Avoid tanning or using retinoids for at least a week
  • Stay hydrated and avoid harsh skin treatments

After treatment:

  • Stick to a gentle, hydrating skincare routine
  • Use high SPF daily—even indoors
  • Follow all post-care instructions we provide

Top 10 Myths About Plastic Surgery—Debunked by Experts

May 23, 2025

Portland Plastic Surgeon Expert John S Lee MD
Portland Plastic Surgeon Expert John S Lee MD

Understanding the Truth Behind Cosmetic Procedure Myths

Plastic surgery has become more accessible, refined, and widely accepted than ever before. Despite its growing popularity, many still have outdated beliefs or misconceptions about cosmetic procedures. These myths can prevent individuals from making informed decisions or even discourage them from exploring treatments that could enhance their quality of life.

In this article, we’re debunking the most common myths about plastic surgery—with insight from experienced, board-certified experts. Whether you’re simply curious or seriously considering a procedure, understanding the truth about cosmetic surgery procedures is a vital first step.

Myth 1: Plastic Surgery Is Only for Vanity

One of the biggest plastic surgery misconceptions is that it’s purely about vanity. In reality, many procedures are performed for reconstructive or functional reasons. For example, a rhinoplasty can correct breathing issues, and breast reduction surgery can alleviate chronic back and neck pain.

Even when the motivation is cosmetic, that doesn’t make it superficial. Plastic surgery for confidence and self-esteem is a valid and common reason. Enhancing your appearance can have a meaningful impact on how you feel about yourself and how you interact with the world.

Myth 2: Only Women Get Plastic Surgery

While women do make up a large portion of patients, men are increasingly seeking cosmetic procedures to enhance their appearance and maintain a youthful look. From gynecomastia surgery (male chest reduction) to eyelid surgery and chin augmentation, men are embracing the benefits of plastic surgery without stigma.

If you’re wondering if cosmetic surgery is just for women, the answer is a resounding no—today’s practices cater to people of all genders and goals.

Myth 3: Plastic Surgery Always Looks Fake

This myth is rooted in outdated examples and extreme cases. The truth about cosmetic surgery procedures today is that the goal is often to create natural-looking enhancements that complement your existing features—not change them entirely.

A qualified plastic surgeon will prioritize balance, proportion, and your personal aesthetic. When done right, you should look refreshed—not “done.”

Myth 4: It’s Only for the Wealthy

Cosmetic surgery is no longer a luxury reserved for celebrities or the ultra-wealthy. While some procedures can still be costly, many practices now offer flexible financing options and package deals to make them more accessible. Non-surgical treatments like Botox and fillers also deliver visible results at a lower price point.

As cosmetic enhancements become more mainstream, people from a wide range of backgrounds are finding that these treatments can be safe, effective, and surprisingly affordable.

Myth 5: The Results Are Permanent and Require No Maintenance

While some procedures offer long-lasting or even permanent results, nothing can stop the natural aging process. Maintenance—through skincare, healthy habits, or occasional touch-ups—is often necessary to keep results looking their best.

Thinking of non-surgical vs surgical cosmetic procedures? Even injectable treatments need periodic maintenance to retain their effects. Managing expectations and planning long-term is key to satisfaction.

Myth 6: Recovery Is Always Painful and Long

Thanks to advances in surgical techniques and anesthesia, many procedures now have shorter recovery times and minimal discomfort. In fact, many patients return to light activity within a few days post-surgery.

Of course, every procedure is different, and recovery depends on your individual health, the type of surgery, and how closely you follow aftercare instructions. Your surgeon will guide you through the process to make it as smooth and safe as possible.

Myth 7: Any Doctor Can Perform Plastic Surgery

This myth can be dangerous. Just because a doctor is licensed doesn’t mean they’re qualified to perform plastic surgery. Always ensure your provider is certified by a recognized board, such as the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).

If you’ve ever wondered how to choose a plastic surgeon safely, this is where to start. Board certification ensures the surgeon has undergone rigorous training and testing, specifically in plastic surgery.

🔎 Looking for a certified doctor? Start here: Find a Surgeon – American Society of Plastic Surgeons

Myth 8: Fillers and Botox Are Safer Alternatives to Surgery

Injectables can be effective, but they’re not one-size-fits-all solutions. Botox and fillers are temporary treatments that address specific concerns, like fine lines or volume loss. They don’t offer the structural changes that surgery can.

The best approach often depends on your goals. A consultation with a provider who offers both surgical and non-surgical options can help determine what will work best for you.

Myth 9: You’ll Look Completely Different

Many people hesitate because they fear losing their identity. But the goal of modern cosmetic surgery is not to transform you into someone else—it’s to help you look like the best version of yourself.

Whether it’s a facelift, breast augmentation, or body contouring, experienced surgeons strive for subtle, personalized outcomes that respect your natural features.

Myth 10: One Procedure Will Fix Everything

It’s easy to believe that a single surgery will be the magic fix—but beauty, health, and confidence are multi-dimensional. Sometimes, the best results come from a comprehensive, customized plan, which might include a combination of treatments or lifestyle recommendations.

If you’re unsure what to know before getting plastic surgery, know this: clear communication, realistic expectations, and a collaborative mindset will help you get the results you’re hoping for.

Final Thoughts

Understanding the facts vs myths about cosmetic surgery can empower you to take control of your choices, whether you’re just exploring the idea or ready to take the next step.

The best thing you can do is consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who prioritizes safety, ethics, and education. A good surgeon will guide you through decision-making with honesty, transparency, and respect for your goals.

Portland Mommy Makeover 101: Everything You Need to Know About Restoring Your Pre-Baby Confidence

April 17, 2025

NW Plastic Surgery Portland Dr. John S. Lee

What is a Mommy Makeover and Why Portland Moms Are Choosing It

Welcoming a child into the world is a joyous milestone, but pregnancy and childbirth can significantly change your body—both physically and emotionally. From stretched skin to hormonal shifts and lowered self-esteem, these changes can take a toll, leaving many moms searching for ways to feel like themselves again. If you’re among the many moms considering ways to regain your pre-baby confidence, you’ve likely heard about the “Mommy Makeover.” But what exactly is it, and why has it become so popular among Portland residents?

What Exactly is a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is a customized combination of plastic surgery procedures specifically designed to address the common body changes that occur after pregnancy. Typically, it includes procedures like breast lifts, tummy tucks, and liposuction or body contouring. Each Mommy Makeover is tailored to your unique needs, goals, and physical condition, helping you restore and enhance your natural beauty.

Why Moms Are Choosing Mommy Makeovers

Holistic wellness and self-care are deeply embedded in our local culture. Moms appreciate the balance between inner well-being and external confidence. With strong community resources like Fit4Mom Portland and local motherhood groups such as PDX Parent, mothers recognize the importance of self-care and see Mommy Makeovers as an empowering step in their wellness journey.

Are You a Good Candidate?

While Mommy Makeovers are life-changing, they’re not for everyone. Ideal candidates are generally in good overall health, at or near their ideal body weight, and have realistic expectations about outcomes. It’s recommended that you wait until you’re finished having children before opting for surgery to ensure the longevity of results. A consultation with a reputable Portland plastic surgeon can help determine your candidacy and tailor a plan specifically for you.

Mommy Makeover Procedures: A Closer Look

Breast Enhancement Procedures

Breast lifts, augmentations, and reductions are popular choices among mothers looking to restore their post-pregnancy bodies. A breast lift (mastopexy) raises and reshapes sagging breasts to achieve a more youthful, natural appearance. Breast augmentation enhances volume and symmetry using silicone or saline implants selected based on your preferences and anatomy. Meanwhile, breast reduction surgery can alleviate physical discomfort such as back, neck, and shoulder pain while improving breast proportion and overall body harmony. Plastic surgeons take a highly personalized approach, ensuring every procedure is tailored to your unique goals, lifestyle, and aesthetic vision.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Pregnancy can leave behind loose skin, weakened abdominal muscles, and stubborn fat. A tummy tuck effectively addresses these concerns, providing a smoother, firmer abdominal area. Recovery usually requires several weeks, but local resources like the NW Plastic Surgery offer excellent guidance to ensure your recovery is comfortable and well-supported.

Liposuction and Body Contouring

Liposuction is a key component of many Mommy Makeover procedures, helping to eliminate stubborn fat deposits in areas such as the abdomen, thighs, and hips. Portland clinics use advanced techniques to achieve precise fat reduction and smooth body contouring. This approach enhances the transformation by sculpting hard-to-tone areas and creating a more balanced, refined silhouette.

Your Mommy Makeover Journey: What to Expect

From the initial consultation through recovery, understanding the process is crucial. During your initial consultation, you’ll discuss your medical history, personal goals, and potential outcomes with your surgeon. Preparation involves lifestyle adjustments such as nutrition optimization—Portland has many qualified nutritionists to assist in pre-surgery planning. The surgery day typically occurs at a trusted outpatient surgical center, and post-surgery, you’ll have structured recovery guidelines to follow, along with local support networks and services to assist in your recovery.

Cost and Financing Options

The cost of a Mommy Makeover varies depending on the procedures chosen, surgeon expertise, and facilities used. Many clinics offer transparent pricing structures and financing solutions like CareCredit to make achieving your goals financially manageable.

Finding the Right Surgeon in Oregon

Selecting a highly skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon is vital to achieving optimal results. Portland is home to excellent surgeons renowned for Mommy Makeovers. Check qualifications, review before-and-after photos, and read local reviews and testimonials from real mothers on platforms like Yelp and RealSelf.

Plastic Surgery vs. Medspa Treatments in Portland: Which is Right for You?

Understanding the Key Differences Between Plastic Surgery and Medspa Treatments

When considering cosmetic enhancements, many find themselves weighing the benefits of plastic surgery versus Medspa treatments. Whether you’re looking for subtle rejuvenation or transformative changes, understanding the differences between these two approaches can help you choose the best path to achieve your aesthetic goals.

Plastic Surgery vs. Medspa Treatments: What’s the Difference?

Plastic surgery typically involves surgical procedures performed by board-certified plastic surgeons. Common procedures like breast augmentation, tummy tucks, facelifts, and liposuction offer dramatic, long-lasting changes. These treatments are ideal if you’re looking for significant, permanent transformations.

In contrast, Medspa treatments provide non-surgical options performed in a relaxing, spa-like environment. Popular Medspa treatments in Portland include Botox, dermal fillers, chemical peels, microneedling, CoolSculpting, and laser skin resurfacing. These procedures offer subtle, natural enhancements with minimal downtime and shorter recovery periods.

Factors to Consider

1. Desired Results and Expectations:

For dramatic, long-lasting improvements such as significant body contouring or lifting sagging skin, plastic surgery may be your best option. Conversely, Medspa treatments are excellent for subtle changes, like smoothing fine lines with Botox, enhancing facial contours with dermal fillers, or addressing minor skin imperfections.

2. Downtime and Recovery:

Some prefer Medspa treatments due to minimal downtime—perfect for quickly returning to busy schedules or active outdoor lifestyles. Treatments like Botox or CoolSculpting generally have no downtime. On the other hand, plastic surgery procedures typically involve a recovery period ranging from several days to weeks, requiring planned time away from work or daily activities.

3. Cost and Budget Considerations:

Plastic surgery in Portland usually involves higher upfront costs but delivers long-lasting results, potentially reducing future treatment expenses. Medspa treatments typically have lower initial costs but require ongoing sessions to maintain optimal results, which can add up over time.

Popular Aesthetic Treatments in Portland

Many lead active, wellness-focused lifestyles, influencing their cosmetic treatment preferences. Here’s what’s trending locally:

  • Plastic Surgery: Mommy makeovers, breast augmentations, and tummy tucks are highly sought-after in Oregon by those seeking substantial transformations.
  • Medspa Treatments: Botox, dermal fillers, CoolSculpting, chemical peels, and laser skin resurfacing are favored by those seeking quick, effective enhancements with minimal downtime.

Choosing Based on Your Lifestyle

  • Active Lifestyle: Outdoor enthusiasts often prefer Medspa treatments due to minimal downtime, allowing them to quickly return to active routines.
  • Busy Professionals: Quick, non-invasive treatments such as Botox or dermal fillers are ideal for professionals with tight schedules.
  • Major Life Transformations: Those looking for considerable aesthetic changes, such as after childbirth or significant weight loss, benefit most from surgical procedures.

Real-Life Examples

Consider these typical scenarios:

  • Subtle Enhancement: A busy professional might choose Botox and dermal fillers to refresh their appearance without downtime.
  • Significant Change: A mother looking to reclaim her pre-pregnancy figure might opt for a mommy makeover, combining tummy tuck and breast augmentation.
  • Preventative Skincare: Younger ones focused on wellness and prevention might choose regular Medspa treatments like chemical peels or microneedling to maintain healthy, youthful skin.

Choosing the Right Provider in Portland

Whether you’re leaning toward plastic surgery or Medspa treatments, selecting a reputable provider is crucial. Look for board-certified plastic surgeons or highly-rated Medspas known for expertise, excellent patient reviews, and results that align with your aesthetic preferences. Providers embracing healthy aesthetic values—such as sustainability, holistic wellness, and personalized care—typically offer the best patient experience.

Common FAQs from Portland Residents

Can I combine plastic surgery and Medspa treatments?

Absolutely. Many patients combine surgical procedures with Medspa treatments to enhance overall results and maintain their aesthetic improvements.

How frequently do I need Medspa treatments compared to plastic surgery?

Plastic surgery typically provides permanent or very long-lasting results, whereas Medspa treatments often require periodic maintenance—for example, Botox injections every few months.

Will my insurance cover these procedures?

Usually, cosmetic procedures aren’t covered by insurance. However, treatments with a medical component, like breast reduction or reconstructive surgery, might be covered. Always check directly with your insurance provider and consult your surgeon to confirm if they accept insurance.

Making Your Decision

Choosing between the lasting impact of plastic surgery and the convenience of Medspa treatments comes down to aligning your decision with your personal goals, budget, and lifestyle.

Real Patient Shares Facelift and Blepharoplasty Success Story

Aging is a natural process, but for many, the external signs of aging don’t match how they feel inside. One of Dr. John Lee’s patients recently shared their incredible transformation after undergoing a facelift and upper blepharoplasty at John S. Lee MD Clinic in Portland. Their story is a testament to the power of expert surgical care in restoring confidence and enhancing quality of life.

Patient Testimonial

“In my mid-50s, I had had a few minimally invasive filler treatments but couldn’t really see any results. I was feeling good internally, but the years of fun in the sun and the stress of life had really made me start to feel self-conscious about my loss of jawline and sagging facial skin. I had my facelift performed by Dr. John Lee when I was 58. Four years have passed, and I feel better than ever. I also feel like the facelift and neck skin removal helped me to alleviate my mild sleep apnea. I no longer wake up gasping for air in the middle of the night. I feel so revitalized, energetic, and young again. I still look like myself, but a 10-15 year younger refreshed version of myself. I heard it said that a facelift lasts 10-15 years, but I feel removing and tightening the extra skin will make a difference for the rest of my life. I retired at age 56 and recently attended a work reunion, and one co-worker said: ‘How is it that all of us look older and you look younger?’ I just smiled.

Having had such amazing results with my facelift, I scheduled an upper blepharoplasty for my hooded eyes. Although it has only been a week since this pain-free surgery, I can already see the positive results. I feel like Dr. Lee’s extensive skill, artistry, and knowledge, his professional team, plus my last excellent experience ensured the best possible outcome, and I was right. I have nothing but good things to say about everyone I have interacted with in his office, and I could not be happier with my results.”

Why Choose John S. Lee, MD?

Menopause and Skin Health: Understanding the Impact and Solutions

November 18, 2024

Menopause is a transformative stage in a woman’s life, marking the end of her reproductive years. While many discussions focus on the physical and emotional symptoms, one area that often gets overlooked is how menopause can impact skin health. As hormonal levels fluctuate, skin can lose its youthful elasticity, hydration, and tone. In this article, we’ll explore how menopause affects skin health and the effective treatments available to maintain vibrant, resilient skin.

1. Hormonal Changes and Skin Texture

As menopause approaches, estrogen and progesterone levels decline, leading to noticeable changes in the skin’s texture, elasticity, and hydration. The decrease in this hormone can lead to:

  • Thinner Skin: Estrogen is vital for collagen production, maintaining the skin’s thickness and firmness. Reduced collagen results in thinner, less resilient skin, making it more prone to wrinkling, dryness, and visible veins.
  • Dryness: Diminished oil production during menopause often leads to drier skin, causing itchiness and flakiness.
  • Sagging Around the Mouth: A decrease in estrogen affects the skin around the mouth, causing volume loss, dryness, and sagging in the jowl area, often visible as perioral rhytids or marionette lines.

2. Increased Sensitivity

Hormonal fluctuations can heighten skin sensitivity during menopause, leading to:

  • Redness and Irritation: Skin may react more easily to products, weather changes, or even stress.
  • Rosacea and Other Conditions: Women who never had sensitive skin may find conditions like rosacea becoming more pronounced.

3. Changes in Pigmentation

Menopausal hormonal shifts can also affect melanin production, resulting in:

  • Age Spots: Increased pigmentation in certain areas can result in dark spots, often called “sun spots.”
  • Uneven Skin Tone: Hormonal imbalances can lead to changes in how the skin absorbs and produces melanin, resulting in patchy pigmentation.

4. Adult Acne and Breakouts

While some women experience dryness, others may face unexpected adult acne due to:

  • Hormonal Imbalance: Menopausal changes in hormone levels can lead to increased oil production, clogging pores and causing breakouts.
  • Stress: Menopause can be a stressful time, and increased stress levels can exacerbate acne.

Tips for Maintaining Healthy Skin During Menopause

Maintaining skin health during menopause requires a dedicated skincare routine and lifestyle adjustments. Here are some expert tips:

  1. Hydrate: Drinking plenty of water is essential to keep skin hydrated and maintain a plump appearance.
  2. Use Gentle Products: Opt for mild, hydrating cleansers that won’t strip the skin of natural oils. Avoid harsh soaps that can increase dryness. Use moisturizers rich in hyaluronic acid and ceramides to combat dryness.
  3. Apply Sun Protection: With increased pigmentation risk, wearing sunscreen daily is crucial. Look for a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher.
  4. Balanced Diet: Incorporate foods rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and vitamins to support skin health from the inside out. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and flaxseeds can help with hydration.
  5. Consult a Dermatologist: If skin changes are significant or troubling, seeking advice from a dermatologist can provide tailored solutions, such as topical treatments or procedures.
  6. Consult with a Plastic Surgeon: Plastic surgeons offer surgical interventions to treat sagging skin in the face, neck, and jowl areas, as well as injectable treatments for loss of volume in the face.
  7. Consider Hormone Therapy: For some women, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help mitigate severe symptoms of menopause, including skin changes. Discuss this option with a healthcare provider.

Corrective Plastic Surgery: Restoring Confidence and Natural Beauty with John S. Lee, MD

October 30, 2024

plastic surgery repair in Portland NW Plastic Surgery
plastic surgery repair in Portland NW Plastic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery can be life-changing, offering individuals the chance to enhance their appearance and boost their self-confidence. However, not all procedures go as planned, and sometimes patients are left unsatisfied with their results. This is where plastic surgery repair, also known as revision cosmetic surgery, plays a crucial role.

At John S. Lee MD, we recognize that the path to achieving aesthetic goals doesn’t always turn out as expected. Whether due to complications or the desire for refinement, revision surgery is a common concern for many patients. These corrective procedures are often more complex than the initial surgery, requiring a surgeon with exceptional expertise, extensive experience, and an eye for aesthetic harmony. Dr. Lee specializes in these intricate revisions, helping patients achieve the natural, beautiful results they initially envisioned.

Understanding Plastic Surgery Revision

Plastic surgery repair, or revision surgery, involves correcting or improving the results of a previous cosmetic procedure. This can be necessary for various reasons, including:

  • Complications: Issues such as infection, scarring, or implant problems that arise post-surgery can be distressing and often require corrective procedures.
  • Unmet Expectations: Sometimes, the initial results may not meet the patient’s desired outcome, leading them to seek further adjustments.
  • Changes Over Time: Natural aging, weight fluctuations, or changes in the body over time can alter the results of previous surgeries, necessitating revision to maintain or enhance the appearance.
  • Functional issues: Some procedures, such as breast augmentation or eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), may require revision to address discomfort, vision obstruction, or other functional concerns.

Common Plastic Surgery Revision Procedures

Transformative Results: A Patient’s Story of Natural Beauty with Dr. John S. Lee

September 23, 2024

Achieving a Youthful, Natural Look: A Happy Client’s Success Story

At John S. Lee MD Clinic, we understand that choosing to undergo a cosmetic procedure is a deeply personal decision. Many of our patients seek to refresh their appearance while preserving their natural features, aiming to become more youthful and confident. This is where Dr. John Lee’s expertise shines, delivering natural-looking results that enhance a patient’s unique beauty.

One of our recent patients had spent years exploring non-surgical options like serums, creams, and injectables. While these provided some improvement, she desired a more lasting solution that could deliver a more polished and naturally beautiful outcome to restore her youthful glow. Dr. Lee worked closely with her to create a personalized plan, addressing her concerns. The result? A stunning transformation that left her feeling more confident than ever, with friends and family simply noticing her radiant, refreshed appearance.

Dr. Lee’s approach is grounded in a deep understanding of each patient’s individual features and aesthetic goals. With a combination of precision and an artistic eye, he tailors every treatment to naturally enhance each patient’s beauty. Whether through a face or neck lift, his patients leave feeling rejuvenated and empowered, knowing they look like the best version of themselves.

At NW Plastic Surgery Center Portland, our primary focus is ensuring each patient’s satisfaction. This recent success story showcases how a customized and attentive approach can lead to truly transformative results, leaving patients feeling confident and revitalized.

Patient Testimonial

“The results of my face and neck lift were life-changing for me, and the entire experience with Dr. Lee’s office was pleasant and positive. For years, I’ve wanted to do something to look my best.  I’ve tried serums, creams, and Botox, and they helped somewhat, but my jowls and saggy neck were especially bothering me.

I did some online research to find the best surgeon who could help me look younger, but I wanted to make sure that I would still look like myself. I found Dr. Lee and my instincts were accurate – he suggested the best approach to addressing my main concerns, did not try to push unnecessary procedures, and used his artistic eye to create a most natural look.  Friends comment that I look younger and glowing, but they do not know that I’ve had surgery!  Thank you, Dr. Lee, nurse Irina, and admin staff!” -C.T.

How to Choose the Best Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon: What You Need To Know

Top Decision Drivers for Plastic Surgery: Data from the Latest Report

Choosing a plastic surgeon is a significant decision that involves careful consideration of several key factors. With the increasing number of providers offering aesthetic services, it’s essential to be well-informed to make the best choice for your needs. According to the 2024 report “The State of Aesthetics,” the top considerations for patients are board certification, patient reviews, recommendations from friends and family, education and training, and before-and-after photo galleries. Here’s an in-depth look at each of these factors.

1. Board Certification: A Mark of Trust and Expertise

One of the most critical factors for patients is ensuring their surgeon is board-certified. According to the report, 66% of people consider board certification to be crucial. A board-certified plastic surgeon has undergone extensive training and rigorous examinations to achieve this status. They possess the highest level of expertise in the field, which is essential for ensuring both safety and optimal results.

It’s important to note that any physician with a medical license can legally perform plastic surgery, even if they haven’t received specialized training in this field. These practitioners may label themselves as cosmetic surgeons, which can be misleading. Therefore, it’s imperative to verify that your surgeon is a board-certified plastic surgeon, not just a cosmetic surgeon.

Dr. John S. Lee is an exemplary board-certified plastic surgeon. His extensive training and certification ensure that his patients receive care that meets the highest standards of safety and efficacy. To verify if your surgeon is board-certified, you can visit The American Board of Plastic Surgery Inc.’s website.

2. Patient Reviews and Testimonials: Real-Life Experiences Matter

The experiences of previous patients provide invaluable insight when choosing a plastic surgeon. In fact, 64% of people rely on patient reviews and testimonials as a significant decision driver. These reviews offer a real-world perspective on the surgeon’s skills, bedside manner, and overall patient experience.

Google reviews, in particular, are a trustworthy resource for getting an honest evaluation of a surgeon’s practice. Dr. Lee has over 100 Google reviews, with many patients sharing their positive experiences and outcomes. These testimonials often play a decisive role in helping new patients feel confident in their choices.

3. Recommendations from Friends and Family: Trust and Reassurance

Personal recommendations from friends and family are another critical factor, with 62% of people considering them when choosing a plastic surgeon. There’s a unique reassurance that comes from knowing someone you trust had a positive experience with the same surgeon.

At John S. Lee MD Portland Clinic, many of Dr. Lee’s new patients come through referrals from satisfied clients. These word-of-mouth recommendations speak volumes about the quality of care and results Dr. Lee consistently delivers.

4. Education and Training: The Foundation of Excellence

A surgeon’s education and training background are foundational to their expertise, and 58% of patients consider this when making their decision. Dr. John Lee’s educational journey is both extensive and impressive. He earned his dental degree from Columbia University and a medical degree from the same prestigious institution. His training didn’t stop there; he completed a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and a general surgery residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Finally, he completed a plastic surgery residency at Oregon Health Sciences University, where he honed his skills in the latest surgical techniques.

This robust educational background ensures that Dr. Lee is equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform complex plastic surgery procedures with precision and care.

5. Before-and-After Photo Galleries: Visual Evidence of Expertise

For many patients, seeing is believing. Before-and-after photo galleries are a powerful tool for evaluating a plastic surgeon’s work. According to the report, 55% of people use these galleries as a guide in their decision-making process. These photos provide tangible proof of a surgeon’s ability to deliver the results patients desire.

Dr. Lee’s practice features an extensive and regularly updated gallery of patient photos showcasing the transformations he has achieved. These images highlight his skill and provide prospective patients with the most current examples of his work, helping them visualize the potential outcomes of their procedures. This ongoing commitment to keeping the gallery up to date ensures patients have access to the latest results, reflecting Dr. Lee’s dedication to continuous excellence in his field.

Key Takeaways: Making an Informed Decision

When choosing a plastic surgeon, it’s crucial to consider multiple factors to ensure you make the best choice for your needs. Board certification, patient reviews, personal recommendations, education and training, and visual evidence of a surgeon’s work are all critical components in this decision-making process.

Dr. John S. Lee embodies excellence in all these areas, making him a top choice for patients seeking natural-looking, high-quality results in plastic surgery. By prioritizing these factors, you can feel confident that you’re in good hands, ready to achieve the aesthetic outcomes you desire.

Why Recovery is Crucial for Your Cosmetic Surgery Success

Recovery is a vital part of your surgery journey. Whether you’re undergoing a facelift, blepharoplasty, breast augmentation, or breast implant removal with Dr. John Lee, the recovery period is essential for your healing, comfort, and achieving the results you desire.

Understanding the importance of downtime, following post-operative guidance, and having support during recovery are key factors in ensuring a smooth and successful healing process. Proper recovery planning prioritizes your health and well-being, allowing you to fully benefit from your surgery and achieve the best possible results.

The Importance of Downtime

For most surgeries, a minimum of one week of complete rest is necessary, with some procedures requiring up to three to four weeks. During this downtime, it’s important to avoid work, exercise, house chores, socializing, or any activities that could increase your heart rate and blood pressure. Overexerting yourself can interfere with your healing process and may even set you back. Giving yourself enough time to recover fully is crucial.

Post-Operative Guidance

During your post-operative appointments, Dr. Lee will provide detailed instructions on when and how to resume normal activities and exercise. It is important to follow his guidance carefully to ensure a smooth and successful recovery. His personalized recovery plan will help you achieve the best possible results.

The Role of Support During Recovery

Having the support of friends, family, or a professional caregiver during the first few days, or even up to a week, can greatly aid your recovery. They can help with meal preparation, housecleaning, medication management, and personal care. For some surgeries, you may need assistance getting out of bed. Dr. Lee also recommends minimal movement around your home to maintain proper blood flow and support your healing.

Essential Recovery Planning: Prioritizing Your Health and Well-Being

When scheduling your surgery with Dr. Lee, it’s essential to plan for adequate rest and recovery. Following post-operative instructions closely is crucial for achieving the best outcome. Proper recovery time allows you to fully benefit from your surgery. Your health and well-being are invaluable, so investing in this recovery period is essential. Give yourself the necessary time and care to ensure the best possible results.

If you have any questions or need further information about your recovery process, don’t hesitate to reach out to Dr. Lee’s office. We are here to provide personalized guidance and support every step of the way.

Managing Capsular Contracture After Breast Implant Surgery

Common Complications of Breast Implant Surgery

John S. Lee MD article

Breast implant surgery can provide many with a boost in confidence and satisfaction with their appearance. However, it’s important to be aware of potential complications, one of the most common being capsular contracture. This condition can significantly impact the outcome of the surgery, leading to discomfort and aesthetic concerns.

What is Capsular Contracture?

Capsular contracture occurs when the scar tissue naturally forming around a breast implant tightens and compresses the implant. This tightening can cause the breast to feel firm, become misshapen, and sometimes result in pain or discomfort. The severity of capsular contracture is classified using the Baker Grading System:

  • Grade I: The breast feels normally soft and looks natural.
  • Grade II: The breast is a little firm but still appears normal.
  • Grade III: The breast is firm and looks abnormal or distorted.
  • Grade IV: The breast is hard, painful, and appears abnormal.

Causes of Capsular Contracture

The exact cause of capsular contracture is not fully understood, but several factors can contribute to its development, including:

  • Infection: Bacterial contamination can provoke an inflammatory response.
  • Hematoma: An accumulation of blood around the implant can promote the formation of excessive scar tissue.
  • Seroma: Accumulation of serous fluid around the implant may cause tissue irritation.
  • Bacterial Contamination: Even minimal bacterial presence can trigger a significant immune response.
  • Implant Rupture or Leakage: This can directly irritate the surrounding tissue.

Treatment Options

The treatment for capsular contracture varies depending on its severity. Here are some common approaches:
• Non-Surgical Methods: These include massage, medication, and ultrasound therapy. These methods aim to soften the scar tissue and alleviate discomfort.
• Surgical Interventions: For more severe cases, surgical options like capsulotomy (releasing the scar tissue) or capsulectomy (removing the scar tissue) are considered.

Dr. Lee, a highly experienced surgeon in this field, emphasizes the importance of thorough treatment. For patients undergoing breast implant removal, Dr. Lee performs a capsulectomy to ensure complete removal of any remaining scar tissue and foreign matter, providing a comprehensive solution to capsular contracture.

Capsular contracture is a challenging complication of breast implant surgery, but understanding its causes, symptoms, and treatment options can help manage and mitigate its effects. If you are experiencing symptoms of capsular contracture, consulting with an experienced surgeon like Dr. Lee can provide you with the best approach to achieve a satisfactory outcome.

Achieve Natural Facial Contours with Fat Transfer

March 27, 2024

Portland Cosmetic Surgery Fat Transfer to Face

Achieve Long-Lasting Facial Fullness with Your Own Fat Cells

Portland Cosmetic Surgery Fat Transfer to Face

As we age, our face loses volume and youthful contours. Dr. Lee offers a natural solution through fat transfer, a procedure that uses your own fat cells to restore volume and fullness in different areas of the face to achieve a rejuvenated look. Whether as part of a facelift or a standalone treatment, fat transfer can enhance the cheeks, tear troughs, lips, and more. This method not only provides long-lasting results but also avoids the risks associated with synthetic fillers, offering a safer, more natural alternative to achieving your aesthetic goals.

The Process: Liposuction and Precision

Dr. Lee typically harvests a small amount of fat through liposuction, usually from the belly. For patients with very little body fat, the inner knee can serve as an alternative donor site. Despite the small quantity taken, the donor site can be painful, so applying ice to the area is recommended. However, icing should not be used where the fat has been placed to allow a blood supply to establish and the fat to integrate properly. It may take a few months to see the final results.

Benefits: Natural Fillers vs. Chemical Fillers

Fat transfer offers numerous advantages over chemical fillers:

  1. Longevity: Fat transfer results can be longer-lasting compared to chemical fillers, which may require frequent touch-ups.
  2. Natural Substance: Using your own fat cells eliminates the risk of allergic reactions or adverse effects from foreign substances.
  3. Holistic Improvement: Liposuction to obtain the fat can also provide contouring benefits to the donor site.
  4. Enhanced Safety: Since the procedure uses autologous fat (your own fat), it reduces the risk of infection and complications associated with synthetic materials.

Weekly Update from Dr. Lee’s Office

June 27, 2023

This week Dr. Lee worked wonders with not one, but two breast reduction surgeries – talk about confidence soaring! And that’s not all – two breast implant removals with capsulectomy (one even got a lift), a dynamic duo of tummy tucks for those supercharged makeovers, plus an upper and lower blepharoplasty to make those eyes pop! Oh, and wait for it – a rhinoplasty with upper blepharoplasty surgery combo that’s like a symphony of transformation.

It was not all work though. The office got together for a delicious work dinner at an Italian restaurant. It was great to all get together and relax, eat and laugh. And for us all to connect as often the surgical staff have limited interaction with front desk staff. Thank you Dr. Lee for hosting this fun night out.

A Week in Review: Dr. Lee’s Surgical Endeavors

It has been another busy week for Dr. Lee, showcasing his expertise and dedication in a variety of complex surgical procedures.

Monday

Facelift with Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty

The week began with a full day of surgery on Monday. Dr. Lee performed a comprehensive facelift, complemented by upper and lower blepharoplasty. This intricate procedure aimed to rejuvenate the patient’s facial appearance, addressing both sagging skin and eyelid concerns.

Wednesday

Brow Lift

On Wednesday, Dr. Lee tackled a somewhat atypical case. He performed a brow lift surgery, which is usually accompanied by upper eye surgery. However, this patient requested only the browlift, seeking a more focused enhancement of the brow area.

Thursday

Breast Reduction Surgery

On Thursday, Dr. Lee carried out a breast reduction surgery for a patient suffering from chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain. The procedure aimed not only to alleviate physical discomfort but also to improve the patient’s overall quality of life.

Friday

Breast Implant Removal with Total Capsulectomy

The week concluded with a remarkable and challenging surgery on Friday. Dr. Lee removed breast implants that were an astonishing 40 years old. The patient had undergone an ultrasound, revealing ruptured implants and severe capsular contracture, which had distorted the breast shape.

During surgery, Dr. Lee discovered abnormal and permanent folding of the implants, with leaking silicone gel material. The capsules had become very thick and calcified due to the body’s scar tissue response to contain the leakage. Dr. Lee meticulously removed the capsule along with the implant to prevent further leakage into the surrounding tissue. The patient expressed immense relief post-surgery and is now on the path to recovery!

Wrapping Up the Week

Dr. Lee’s week was marked by a variety of complex procedures, each requiring precision and expertise. From facelifts and browlifts to significant breast surgeries, Dr. Lee demonstrated his commitment to improving his patient’s lives through skilled surgical intervention.

Another week of outstanding surgical care with Dr. Lee!
